Down to the Garden

from 2005 home recordings by Sonya Hunter

/

lyrics

sunflower yellow dahlia scarlet orange marigold
an autumn feast in the eyes of two whose love remains untold
yes we were there when ripe apples fell upon a grassy bed
in September with the scent of lilacs dancing round our heads

we go down to the garden when the light is just starting to fall
we go down when the orioles sing and the sparrows call

rambling rose winding through the arches high above the pond
watch her go! racing waterlilies through the fern and frond
yes we were there with the bees the bees buzzin' all around
oh lavender! don't tell a single soul what we have found

we go down to the garden when the light is just starting to fall
we go down when the orioles sing and the sparrows call

Proud mullein watching from your silver green downy leaves
would you refrain from rendezvous as dangerous as these?
yes we went there passed through the gate beneath the pewter sky
sweet vetiver will never need to know the reason why

we go down to the garden when the light is just starting to fall
we go down when the orioles sing and the sparrows call
we go down to the garden when the light is the fairest of all
